Determination of trace cadmium by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after adsorption and enrichment with exopolymers

Abstract:The adsorption behavior of exopolymers PS-2 to cadmium, a kind of sorbent produced from Pseudomonas sp., was studied by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. As a result, a novel determination method of trace Cd(Ⅱ) in environmental water samples was proposed after concentration and separation with exopolymers PS-2 as sorbent. The results showed that when the dosage of exopolymers PS-2 was 0.30 g at pH 6.0, the adsorption rate was up to 99.5 % with static adsorption capacity of 35.97 mg/g. Cadmium adsorbed on exopolymers PS-2 could be eluted quantitatively with 10 mL of 1 mol/L HCl as the desorption reagent. The detection limit of this method was 2.4 ng/L and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was 2.5 % (c=0.3 μg/mL, n=9) for Cd(Ⅱ). The proposed method has been applied to the determination of trace Cd(Ⅱ) in tap water and Yudai river water samples with recoveries of 95%-101%, and the results were consistent with those obtained by standard method.
