Abstract:The discharge behavior of light source in spark source atomic emission spectrometry was very complicated and it was difficult to observe directly. In order to study the emission behavior of atoms in single spark discharge, the time-resolved function and single spark treatment technique of spark source atomic emission spectrometer were utilized to design the experiments. The chronological sequence curves of light intensity in single spark discharge were obtained for atoms of seven elements in certified reference materials of stainless steel, including iron, aluminum, silicon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur and carbon. The characteristics of chronological curves between single spark intensity and time were analyzed for each testing element. It was found that the emission behavior of atom in single spark excitation was behind the discharge behavior. The duration of chronological curve of single spark under same excitation condition and the time of maximum intensity of atoms were different for various elements. It provided a new route to decrease the detection limit, improve the sensitivity of spark source atomic emission spectrometer and avoid the spectral interference among elements. Moreover, it also provided a new way to further study the behavior of microscopic particles in spark discharge process.
