Simultaneous determination of oxygen and nitrogen in vanadium aluminum master alloy by inert gas fusion infrared absorption/thermal conductivity method

Abstract:An analysis method for simultaneous determination of oxygen and nitrogen in vanadiumaluminum master alloy by inert gas fusioninfrared absorption/thermal conductivity method was proposed. Optimal analysis conditions were obtained as follows: after 0.05-0.06 g of sample was packed with 0.50 g of nickel capsule, they were put in high temperature graphite crucible for determination with analytical power as 5.1 kW. The calibration parameter of oxygen was obtained with titanium certified reference materials, while nitrogen with vanadiumaluminum master alloy internal control sample (nitrogen content was refer to the results obtained by distillationtitration method). The proposed method was applied to the determination of oxygen and nitrogen in AlV55, AlV65 and AlV85 samples. The relative standard deviations (RSD, n=8) were no more than 3.9%, and the results of nitrogen were consistent with those obtained by distillationtitration method. The recovery test was performed by adding powdered certified reference materials of silicon carbide into AlV85 sample, and the recoveries of oxygen were 97%105%. The spectralpurity Al2O3 powder was mixed with AlV65 sample to prepare synthetic sample. The determination results of oxygen in synthetic sample by this proposed method were consistent with the theoretical calculation value.
