Determination of magnetic iron in steel slags by specific gravity method

Abstract:The accurate determination of magnetic iron in steel slag is significant to enhance the recovery rate and efficiency of magnetic separation. A method was put forward for the determination of the magnetic iron in slag by multi-level magnetic separation through measuring the density of magnetic concentrate of steel slag and tail slag, on the assumption that the density of the non-magnetic phases in the magnetic concentrate of steel slag was the same as density of tail slag. Converter slag and desulfurization slag were tested. The magnetic iron in these two slags was found as 3.81% and 3.72% (mass fraction), respectively, and the average error was 3.93%. Then, two industrial standards (YB/T 140 and YB/T 4188-2009) were offered to verify the reliability of test results. XRD results proved there were many magnetic phases present in magnetic concentrate and the major phases in steel slag was similar with the phases in tail slag, indicating that this method was feasible.
