Abstract: In presence of KSCN and polyethylene glycol-2000, the trace zinc in municipal sludge was determined based on the coloring reaction between Zn and rhodamine B (RhB). The results showed that, the coloring reaction between Zn and RhB was highly sensitive in the medium of 0.84 mol/L HCl. The formed complex Zn2+-SCN-RhB had maximum absorption wavelength at 600 nm. The apparent molar absorptivity was 1.6×106 L·mol-1·cm-1. Beer's law was obeyed for the content of Zn in range of 0-0.060 mg/L. The detection limit of method was 0.04 μg/L. The proposed method was applied to the determination of trace zinc in municipal sludge, and the results were consistent with those obtained by dithizone photometry. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=6) was 0.3 %.
