The analytic method of determining the content of ruthenium by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES) in 5%(V/V) hydrochloric acid was used, with sodium peroxide melting waste ruthenium catalysts in a 800 ℃ muffle. The methods for sample pretreatment and determination were studied and contrasted, and the interference of metallic impurities in the determining process was investigated, as well. Results showed that the equal content of Na, Ca, Mg, Pb, Al, Co, Ni, Zn, Cd, Bi, Ag, Mn, Rh, Au, Fe with ruthenium in the test solution has no interference on determination. Two waste ruthenium catalysts with different content were determined by this method, the results of which were the same as the results of gravimetric method. This method is convenient and rapid, especially suitable for determining the content of ruthenium in waste ruthenium and ruthenium on carbon.
