Abstract：Spark discharge atomic emission spectrometer has the characteristics of rapid analysis, accurate measurement and simultaneous determination of multiple elements. It is a commonly used analytical instrument for the production in iron and steel metallurgy industry, ultrapure metal analysis in nonferrous industry and special metal analysis in aviation industry. In particular, spark discharge atomic emission spectrometer is widely used in laboratories and ladle analysis in domestic iron and steel enterprises. An ARL4460 spark discharge atomic emission spectrometer, which has been used for nearly 20 years, was used as an example. Some fault phenomena, including abnormal vacuum degree, no intensity signal outputting of elements, absent of (-1 000V) negative high voltage being zero, and failure of on-line, were introduced. By systemically analyzing the structure principle of instrument and referencing technical data in maintenance, the reasons for faults were found out based on technical measurement. Moreover, the specific locations were determined. The faults were overcome by replacing spare parts and adjusting parameters to ensure the normal operation of instrument. The study provided good reference for the maintenance and repair of such equipment.
