Abstract:As non-metallic inclusions do great harm to bearing steel, it would be crucial to characterize the inclusions in steel comprehensively. The inclusions in super-clean bearing steels were examined by both ASPEX scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrolytic extraction (EE) methods to determine their size, distribution, type, and the original three dimensional shapes. It was found that both methods could determine sulfide, oxide, the complex of sulfide and oxide and titanium compound; moreover, most of inclusions are sulfide, followed by the complex of sulfide and oxide, and most inclusions are smaller than 5 μm. The results on the type and size of inclusions are consistent and reliable. Both methods reveal that there exist large CaO inclusions, but the EE method leads to the finding of large inclusions of SiO2·Al2O3 with the size 18 μm, as well. Thus, the electrolytic extraction method is more reliable for examining the few large inclusions in the super-clean steels.
