Abstract:A method was proposed for the determination of total iron in vanadium titano-magnetite by potassium dichromate titration in combination with X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Thus the interference from vanadium and titanium in the process of determination of total iron in iron ore by potassium dichromate titration was eliminated. The experiment showed that: the hydrolysis of titanium salt could be effectively erased by adding 25 mL of mixed sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid during sample dissolution, to eliminate the interference of titanium. Except for vanadium and titanium, the content of other elements was less than 0.01%, such as copper, arsenic, molybdenum, so they had no interference with the determination of total iron. In the process of dropping titanium trichloride solution to reduce the ferrous ions, the solution was titrated to blue. In other words, the titanium trichloride solution was excessive for 1-2 drops. At this time, the total iron and total vanadium was titrated together.The content of vanadium was determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Then, the content of total iron in vanadium titano-magnetite could be obtained by subtracting the interference amount due to vanadium from the found of total iron obtained by potassium dichromate titration. The proposed method was applied to the determiantion of total iron in vanadium titano-magnetite actual sample and synthetic sample, which was mixed with vanadium titano-magnetite and vanadium pentoxide (analytical grade). The results were consistent with those obtained by national standard method. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=9) was 0.13%-0.30%.
